From dcljr at obkb.com Thu Mar 26 15:19:37 2009 From: dcljr at obkb.com (Donald Lancon) Date: Thu, 26 Mar 2009 10:19:37 -0500 Subject: [clarissa] Google News Alerts on list? Message-ID: <49CB9D09.1050306@obkb.com> As I've posted about a few times in the past, I have Google News Alerts set up for myself for "melissa joan hart", "sabrina witch" (not "teenage", since sometimes the word is hyphenated and sometimes not), and "clarissa explains it all", so I can be notified of news articles containing those words. I was wondering what people thought about having those alerts sent directly to this list so everyone can see them (currently I only post here about the really, really important news items, like MJH being pregnant again :). The second two alerts (for Sabrina and Clarissa) obviously generate many more "false positives" than the first one (i.e., articles containing those words that don't pertain to the topic of this mailing list), but the number is not unacceptably high, IMO. For reference, here's how many such alerts I've gotten in the past month: MJH: 10 relevant alerts STTW: 11 relevant alerts CEIA: 4 relevant alerts (The alerts are collected into daily e-mails, so those are counts of the e-mails I've received, not individual article references. BTW, I could change the frequency to once a week, but that kind of defeats the idea of them being "news". I could also go the other way and choose "as it happens" -- i.e., an e-mail for each individual article, as they are found -- but that seems like overkill.) All of the alerts have generated a handful of false positives -- less than 5 per month for each, I'd say, but it's hard to tell since I immediately delete those messages, so I have no record of how many I've gotten. The STTW article count has been higher than usual lately because of the recent DVD release of STTW season 5. And most of the recent MJH articles are because of the fact that Braydon just turned 1. Most of the CEIA articles are simply mentions of the show in the context of otherwise not very relevant articles, but occasionally it turns up an article about what Mitchell Kriegman (CEIA creator) or Elizabeth Hess (the mom in the show) are doing nowadays. Here's an example of an alert as it would appear on the list (this is from Mar 17th, BTW): - - - === Google News Alert for: "melissa joan hart" === Leni Klum Gives Heidi a Squeeze Celebrity Baby Blog - Forest Hills,NY,USA Heidi is definitely No.1 Mum of the Year, closely followed by Melissa Joan Hart!! I don't want to drive people away from the list, obviously, but it seems to me that the occasional false positives wouldn't outweigh the benefit to most list members of having timely notices about stuff MJH is doing / what people are writing about her. And it might actually spur some conversation around here... :-) - dcljr From freeballer at gmail.com Fri Mar 27 19:51:30 2009 From: freeballer at gmail.com (Geoffrey Lane) Date: Fri, 27 Mar 2009 16:51:30 -0300 Subject: [clarissa] Google News Alerts on list? As far as clarissa or sabrina, I was wondering if you knew of any alerts, etc... from dvd news site(s) that could keep us aware if they are making any more? But I'm likely staying on list until dead, and thought I'll look at any pics of the family I'd rather not just SEE an alert that says "mjh walked the dog on tuesday" unless it added pics, or added to some info (so and so turned 1-2-50-100-1000) (tvondvd.com for example) Anyways. those are my two cents about it P.S. In my experience, if any such site announces upcoming DVD releases, it usually ends up in a Google News Alert item eventually. BTW, Amazon.com used to have an RSS feature where you could create a newsfeed based on any given search at the website. I used it to create a "live bookmark" in Firefox for MJH DVDs. Unfortunately, it stopped working at some point in the past and I haven't bothered to figure out how to recreate such a thing. > But I'm > likely staying on list until dead Glad to hear there's some of you out there.... (BTW, I figure you meant until _you're_ dead, but if you meant until the _list_ is dead, we might almost be at that point! ;) > P.S. Has anybody heard of CIEA making more seasons? On DVD you mean? Unfortunately, no (haven't heard). If I were you, I'd consider lobbying Shout! Factory to make a full, feature-packed release of CEIA on DVD. They did that with 'My So-Called Life', for example, after the original DVD release (by BMG) was less than impressive. Some people might also know their work on the DVD release of 'Freaks & Geeks' -- probably the best DVD release of any TV show ever. :-) Actually, let me rephrase what I said above: *We* should all lobby Shout! Factory to make a high-quality DVD release of CEIA. (Random selling point: they could make the release a 20th anniversary edition: first episode of the show premiered Mar 23, 1991.) - dcljr From dcljr at obkb.com Sun Mar 29 08:44:09 2009 From: dcljr at obkb.com (Donald Lancon) Date: Sun, 29 Mar 2009 03:44:09 -0500 Subject: [clarissa] lobbying Shout! And, hey, here's a forum thread at their website where we can do it: http://www.shoutfactory.com/community/1427/thread.aspx Actually, this forum might be more appropriate: http://www.shoutfactory.com/community/9/forum.aspx It's called "Classic TV I'd love to see on Shout! I didn't see a thread about CEIA in that one.... - dcljr From freeballer at gmail.com Sun Mar 29 20:31:29 2009 From: freeballer at gmail.com (Geoffrey Lane) Date: Sun, 29 Mar 2009 17:31:29 -0300 Subject: [clarissa] Clarissa Digest, Vol 18, Issue 3 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <9fe444490903291331j5aaa5462ke425a247d15c6796@mail.gmail.com> well, dead list or dead me.. whichever comes first. At least though we found a new home after our last list stopped, but its hard to get info.. She's been busy with rl and kids I'm sure. But I guess there's some stuff in production or just finishing this year according to imdb. So thats good, i'm hoping for a regular tv spot at some point.. Maybee might see her again like larissa on the (ohhh so bad) show with rebecca romijn (another show we need more than season 1 for is secret world of alex mack). I'd say the alerts are best solution for that, your right there should be an alert for anything. I'll go onto shout factory and ask around for it, couldn't hurt. Message-ID: <49D1A715.3080202@obkb.com> I've set things up so the 3 Google News Alerts I referred to in my previous post are being sent to the list address (should be, anyway), but I haven't enabled the alerts to actually show up on the list yet, since I need to double-check how they look and decide whether I want to change anything before going "live" with this. Please Stand By. If everything works as expected, we should be getting alerts on the list within the next couple of days. - dcljr
